SPLITZ 4, CHICCARINO'S 3
HERMITAGE -- Host Splitz remained atop the Shenango Valley Modified League by pulling out a 4-3 victory over visiting Chiccarino's Tuesday night at St. Paul's United Church of Christ. Splitz (3-0) scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh to secure the win.
After a run-scoring single from Jonathan Smith tied the game, Rudy Banick lofted a deep sacrifice fly to left that scored Tony Meriello with the game-winner.
Chiccarino's (1-1) took a 3-2 lead in the top of the seventh as Ben Mackall doubled and scored on a single from Phil Ciprian.
Dustin Kulka doubled and singled for Splitz while Meriello and Smith both had two hits apiece. John Napotnik doubled as part of Splitz's 12-hit attack.
For Chiccarino's, Dave Tomko doubled in a run. Winning pitcher Bob Young limited Chiccarino's to just five hits over seven innings. Young had two strikeouts and three walks. Ryan Briggs took the defeat. He allowed one walk in 6 1/3 innings.
The last six regular-season meetings between the teams have been decided by a total of nine runs, including three one-run games. Splitz has won all six games.
